ENTWINE - អំបោះ

Having been separated from Cambodia since 8 years old, my relationship with the culture and family members was lost. Being reintroduced to it years later I can see the drastic differences and became interested to see how it would look if I were to connect both culture together. This project threads the American and Khmer culture to one another. I wanted to create wearable clothing that has a mix of traditional Khmer fabrics and American style. Using Krama, one of the most symbolic piece of fabric in Khmer culture, I altered it in to modern outfits such as shirts, shorts, and hats. The Krama is a huge part of Cambodia because it can be used for many things such as scarf, headgear, towel, belt, bag, hammock and more without having to cut or resew the fabric at all. I sew these clothes without the use of a sewing machine to continue the tradition of how these Krama is made. Even today, the Krama is still being made by hands one thread at a time.
